How to Keep Your Piano in Tune Longer

One of the most common questions we hear at The Piano Place is: “How often should I tune my piano?” While every piano goes out of tune over time, there are ways to extend the life of each tuning and keep your instrument sounding beautiful longer.

The most important factor is climate control. Pianos are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Place your instrument away from direct sunlight, exterior doors, or heating and cooling vents. Sudden shifts in environment cause the wood and strings to expand or contract, which throws the piano out of tune.

Another step is to invest in a humidity control system designed specifically for pianos. These systems help stabilize the environment around your instrument, protecting both the tone and the structural integrity. Even a small portable humidifier in the room can make a big difference.

Finally, plan for regular professional tuning. Most manufacturers recommend tuning every 6–12 months depending on usage. Think of it as routine maintenance, like servicing a car. Regular care prevents bigger issues later and ensures your piano always sounds its best for practice and performance.

A well-maintained piano not only plays better but also retains its value. By following these simple steps, you’ll enjoy an instrument that stays in harmony for years to come.

Something remarkable is happening in classical music right now, and honestly, I don't think it's getting nearly enough attention.
